having self esteem in high school is rare, and usually involves a stable home. I was a pariah, and I think most of it was that I was nonconformist and I thought everyone else at the school was a sheep.
That probably didn't help things.

I don't know why I was thinking of footbinding-but I am always interested in opposites that coexist...
women started binding from practically birth and broke toes to make them fit in 2-3" shoes. The men used to suck on them and think it was sexy. Women had no income, so it was bind em or starve.
